Description

Victoria Arch is a memorial arch located in Queen's Wood, likely built in 1766 and altered in 1858. It is constructed from ashlar and coursed squared tooled gritstone. The arch features four giant Ionic columns that support a pediment, which includes later glazed tiles in the frieze and an inscription that reads: "TO COMMEMORATE THE/ VISIT OF/ QUEEN VICTORIA/ FOR THE INAUGURATION/ OF THE TOWN HALL/ TO LEEDS SEP 7 1858." It is believed that the arch was originally erected as a decorative feature when the grounds of Kirkstall Grange were redesigned in 1766.
