Description

Macauley Hall at Leeds Metropolitan University is a hall of residence built in 1911 by architect GW Atkinson. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar details and features a slate hipped roof. It stands three storeys high and has five unequal bays with window arrangements of 3, 5, 1, 5, and 3. Designed in a Classical 'Wrennaissance' style, it is one of seven halls located to the south of the main building, James Graham Hall, and faces east.

The hall has an ashlar plinth, with the central and outer bays projecting forward and featuring pedimented gables. The central entrance consists of paired glazed doors with an overlight that has geometric glazing bars, all set in a cavetto-moulded stone surround topped with a deep moulded cornice. This cornice detail is also repeated above the central window bays 1 and 5. The building has small-pane sash windows throughout, set in round-arched openings on the projecting ground floor of bays 2 and 4, and in stone architraves for the central and outer bays. A deep modillion cornice runs along the top, complemented by tall brick ridge stacks. The interior has not been inspected.
