Description

Fairfax Hall at Leeds Metropolitan University is a hall of residence built in 1911 by architect GW Atkinson. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar details and features a slate hipped roof. It stands three storeys high and has five unequal bays with windows arranged in a pattern of 3, 5, 1, 5, and 3. Designed in a Classical 'Wrennaissance' style, it is one of seven halls located to the south of the main building, James Graham Hall.

The central and outer bays of the hall project forward and are characterized by brick and ashlar rustication, with quoins at the corners. The ground floor features banded brick rustication. The central entrance consists of three-panel double doors topped by a fanlight with Art Nouveau-style tracery, set within a round arch that includes a decorative mask at the keystone, console brackets, and a cornice. Above the entrance, a balustrade fronts the first-floor window, which, along with the second-floor window, is framed by a stone panel with eared architraves. The building has small-pane windows set in round-arched recesses throughout, a first-floor band, a modillion eaves cornice, and pedimented end and center bays, along with tall decorated brick ridge stacks.

Inside, there is a glazed inner screen with geometric X glazing bars that leads into an inner hall with panelled walls. To the right, there is a fireplace with a Classical surround, and round-arched corridors open off to the left and right, featuring glazed double doors, a dado rail, and original panelled doors with moulded casings and overlights. At each end of the corridors, there are cantilevered geometric stone staircases with square-section cast-iron balusters, column newels, and ramped handrails.
