Description
The gatehouse at Kirkstall Abbey, now functioning as the Abbey House Folk Museum, dates back to the 12th century and features later additions, with alterations made in the early 20th century. It is constructed from coursed squared gritstone and has stone slate roofs. The building is three bays deep and includes a wide rib-vaulted passage. Access to the upper rooms is provided by a stone newel staircase located at the southwest corner. There were additions made up until the Dissolution, after which the gatehouse was converted into a dwelling house. A wing from the 15th or 16th century is situated to the southwest, which is two storeys high and features two- and three-light arched windows with stone mullions, tracery, and cusped heads. Early 20th-century additions to the northwest are designed in a Tudor style and include tall corniced chimneys. The interior has not been inspected.
