Description

Heygate Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dated 1682 over the door and has been altered and extended. It is built from coursed magnesian limestone rubble and features a tiled roof with brick chimneys. The layout is a linear three-cell lobby-entry plan, and the building has two storeys with an added bay on the left.

The main range includes a doorway at the junction of the first and second cells, which has a chamfered surround and a large rectangular lintel. Above the doorway is a square stone with a crudely inscribed date of 6 I H 82. There are three side-sliding sash windows on each floor, all with glazing bars; the lower windows may have been lengthened, while the upper ones have stone sills and heads. The stone gable copings feature kneelers, and there is a chimney on the ridge, almost aligned with the doorway, along with another chimney at the right gable.

To the left, there is a single-cell addition with two slightly lower storeys, featuring a small sliding sash window at ground level and a larger one on the first floor. The rear of the building has been altered and is of less interest.

Inside, the central house part has a stop-chamfered firehood bressummer, which has been cut short on the left end for an inserted staircase, and exposed joists. On the first floor, there is some evidence of earlier window positions, and the roof is a common rafter design with some curved struts.
