Description

Old Hall House is a house dating from 1681, with significant remodelling in the late 18th or early 19th century, and a late 19th-century extension which is not part of this listing. It is constructed of coursed squared magnesian limestone, with a stone slate roof. The house follows an H-plan with two and two-and-a-half storeys and a symmetrical 1:2:1 bay arrangement. It has a plinth, and the recessed central section contains a panelled front door with an inserted stone architrave and a moulded hoodmould above. Above the door is a lintel, presumably relocated, bearing the raised lettering “P”. There are two windows on each floor, and a single window on each floor of the wings. The gables of the wings have similar windows at attic level, and a larger 12-pane sash on each floor below. All windows are 12-pane boxed sashes with rectangular lintels scored to look like splayed voussoirs. The return wall of the left wing features two blind windows, two sashes, a 20th-century canted bay window, a gabled dormer and a side wall chimney. The return of the right wing is plain, with no openings, and includes a 20th-century addition to the rear. The rear elevation has a mixture of boxed sashes, and the return re-entrant has been filled in by a later addition. The interior has been altered, featuring a central two-storey hall with a flagged floor and an altered staircase. A blocked stone mullioned window is visible at mid-level of the rear wall of this hall, observed within a service room on the first floor of the rear addition. A beam above the landing has mortices in the soffit, and a similar beam is found in a rear ground-floor room of the right wing, accompanied by a large rectangular fireplace with unusual concave jambs.
