Description

Burton House is a large house, dating from the late 18th century, now used as offices. It is constructed of red brick with a slate hipped roof. The building has a square plan and is arranged with a 1:3:1 window arrangement. The central three bays project slightly and are distinguished by a wide pediment. A moulded dentilled cornice runs along the roofline, and a band defines the floor level. Stone lintels, apron panels, and a sill band feature on the first-floor windows of the central three bays, with the centre window framed by a moulded architrave and dentilled cornice. The main doorway is of particular note, featuring Roman Doric engaged columns, an open pediment, and a good traceried fanlight, alongside a fielded-panel door. All windows are sash windows with glazing bars.

The right-hand return elevation has five bays, with a two-story bow of three sashes and a dentilled eaves cornice that continues around. A low wing projects from the rear, two stories high, with one bay containing a ground-floor Venetian window with a cornice and pulvinated frieze above side lights and a round-headed central light with a keyblock. A doorway is located to the side, also with a moulded round arch and keyblock. The left-hand return of the main building features six bays, with two blocked and a tall, round-headed stair sash window on the first floor with intersecting glazing bars. Below this window is a doorway in a moulded architrave with a rectangular traceried fanlight and fluted frieze and cornice. A good ground-floor semicircular bowed bay window constructed of curved wood sashes, a fluted frieze and cornice is also present to the left. The interior was not inspected during the listing assessment.
