Description

The Former Beeston Hill Board School, built in 1880 by RL Adams, is a former board school located on Beeston Road in Leeds. This building is constructed of red brick with stone details and features a slate roof. It is two storeys high with a basement and has a symmetrical facade with five bays, displaying a classical style. The projecting end bays have entrances marked 'BOYS' and 'GIRLS', each featuring a doorway with an architrave, console brackets, a plaque, and a triangular pediment. The ground floor is pilastered, and a cornice string runs around the building. The three-light first-floor window has a reeded architrave with metopes above, and the deep eaves cornice leads to a pyramid roof. The central bay projects slightly, where a doorway has been converted into a window within a classical surround, complete with pilasters and three narrow first-floor windows. This bay also features a cornice and a segmental pediment above, topped with an ornate pedimented gable that includes a clock. The second bay and left return have round-arched ground-floor windows, which were part of a former covered playground, adorned with carved imposts and keystones, while the upper floor and the fourth bay have rectangular windows, all framed in stone architraves.

Although the interior was not inspected, this building is noted as a fine example of Richard Adams' two-storey schools designed in a classical style. His work was likely influenced by the style used by George Corson for the School Board Offices and Municipal Offices built between 1878 and 1884. By 1903, the school accommodated 1,313 students across two departments, mixed and infants, and a rear wing was added before 1908.
