Description

There are two raised grave slabs located approximately 5 metres south of the entrance path to the Church of St. Mary. One slab commemorates Jonathan Westerman, who died on 14th July 1725 at the age of 42. This slab features a finely-carved vinescroll border and a carved heart with initials and the date. The second slab, set below and slightly to the right, commemorates Abraham Whiteaker, the son of Abraham Whiteaker of Topcliff, who died on 13th April 1746 at the age of 27. This slab includes a carved arched head with an impost, keystone, and trumpeting angels set in the spandrels. Both slabs are made of ashlar and date from the 18th century.
