Description
The tomb of Michael Wood, dating from 1801, is a chest tomb located in an enclosure on the other side of the wall from the bus stop in the graveyard of the Church of St. Mary in Woodkirk, Morley. It is constructed of ashlar and features a raised stone slab on a panelled base, with fluted pilasters at the corners and in the centre. The stone is finely carved, displaying trumpeting angels set in the spandrels of the arched top. The inscription reads: "Sacred to the MEMORY of MICHAEL WOOD Esqr. of Tingley House who (meeting with an Accident here when a Young Man, which nearly proved fatal to him) requested to be interred upon the spot. He died Dec 31st 1801 in the 81st Year of his Age." The carving reflects the local style typical of the 1730s.
