Garage and Outbuildings at Gledhow Hall

The garage and outbuildings at Gledhow Hall were built in the late 19th century and early 20th century for Lord Airedale. They are constructed from coursed squared gritstone and ashlar with a slate roof. An ornate glazed iron-framed canopy is located on the south side, facing the yard. The garage features glazed wooden doors, and the canopy is supported by cast-iron columns with decorative scrolled brackets. Crossed metal straps provide support to the three open sides of the glazed roof, which includes tension rods with cast ornamental bosses and spacers, as well as rectangular glass panes. The interior has not been inspected. Lord Airedale belonged to a prominent Leeds family of engineers, and the later 19th-century alterations to Gledhow Hall were accompanied by the addition of these elaborate garage facilities in the former stable yard, reflecting the transition from horse transport to motor cars.
