Description

These mid-19th century stables and constable's cottage are located on the south side of Gledhow Lane, Gledhow, and form a link to Gledhow Hall. The building was designed by Chorley and Connon, the architects at the Hall, with later 19th-century alterations. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone and ashlar, with a stone slate hipped roof. A timber and lead clock turret with a cupola sits on the ridge at the south end.

The main facade features a wide central doorway with quoined jambs, later doors, and a loading door above. There are six-panel doors with overlights to the left, and a sash window with glazing bars in the centre. A stable door and small window are located to the far right. Upper-floor windows are side-sliding sashes. The clock turret has a ribbed base, round clock faces in moulded surrounds, pediments, an open cupola, an ogee dome, and a tall ornate finial. A taller constable’s cottage is attached to the north end.

A curved ashlar wall with flat moulded coping connects to the south end and incorporates a pair of monolithic stone gate piers topped with banded pyramid capstones. The wall includes panelled wooden two-leaf gates and continues to the service rooms of Gledhow Hall. The interior has not been inspected.
