Description
This listing describes a group of two chest tombs and two raised slabs located approximately 5 meters south of a large tree, about 10 meters due south of the porch to St. Mary's Church. The tombs are dated 1728 and 1729 and are made of ashlar stone.
One chest tomb is on a chamfered plinth and features a finely-carved grave slab inscribed "William Wilson of Haigh Hall," who died on 28th February 1728 at the age of 65. It has a carved border and an arched head with winged-head angel spandrels. The second chest tomb has a panelled base with raised-and-fielded panels and fluted pilasters at the corners. It is inscribed: "HERE Lyeth Interred ye Bodies of five Children of John Leake of Westerton. John died September ye 6th 1729 in ye 5th Year of his Age. Also Margaret aged 2, William aged 8, John aged 5." This tomb features an arched head with carved trumpeting angels in the spandrels.
The raised slabs commemorate "John Curtis of Haigh Manor," who died on 22nd August 1728 at the age of 22, and "Sarah the wife of Thomas Barras of Upper Green," who died on 22nd January 1728 at the age of 38. Both slabs have finely-carved borders with arched heads, winged-head angel spandrels, and carved hearts with dates.
