Description

This is a terrace of four houses located on Shaw Lane in Far Headingley, Leeds, built around 1860 and subsequently altered in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The houses are constructed of coursed square gritstone with ashlar detailing, topped with a slate roof and stone gable copings. A cast-iron gate is also present.

The houses present a symmetrical facade of five bays, with a 2:2:4:2:2 window arrangement. The two-window bays on either side of the central, wider bay project forward, each featuring a gable. They are designed in the Tudor style, with doorways featuring overlights and stone cornices supported by console brackets. French windows are located on the ground floor, with chamfered reveals and dripmoulds. No. 29 incorporates a later 19th-century canted stone bay window with sash windows. A first-floor sill band runs along the facade. The ridge of the roof is punctuated by large, eight-flue stacks positioned centrally and between the gables. The interior of the houses has not been inspected.

A boundary wall runs along the road sides, facing Shaw Lane and Moor Road, extending approximately 80 metres from the north corner of No. 29 and standing around 1.2 metres high with pointed coping. Each house is marked by a pair of square gate piers, banded and topped with pyramid capstones. The gate at No. 23 is likely original, featuring cast-iron bars, dog bars, and acanthus-like finials. The gate piers at No. 29 display the name 'Morris House' painted on them. The style of these houses is similar to that of Nos. 6-12 Monk Bridge Road, which front Claremont Drive, although neither terrace appears on the 1850 Ordnance Survey map.
