Description
Shaw House is a house that now serves as a doctor's house and surgery. It was built in the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the late 19th century. The building features coursed squared gritstone and ashlar, topped with a slate hipped roof. It has two storeys and three bays, with an additional bay on the left side.
The central shallow projecting porch has a glazed door and overlight set in a moulded surround, which is supported by narrow brackets. Above the porch is a deep cornice and a shallow pediment. On either side of the porch are canted bay windows, each with a moulded cornice. The first floor has three 20-pane sash windows in plain stone surrounds, along with a continuous sill band that has moulded brackets. The eaves feature a band, and there are tall end stacks with a modillion cornice.
Inside, the house has panelled double doors and a central hall that is also panelled, featuring a fine staircase and a fireplace that likely dates from the same period as the bay windows. When the 1850 Ordnance Survey map was created, Shaw House was the only building on Shaw Lane.
