Description

Balmoral Terrace is a terrace of three double fronted houses built around 1857 for George Vevers. The houses are constructed from gritstone with gritstone dressings and feature shallow hipped slate roofs with stone chimney stacks. They are two storeys tall.

The garden facades of the houses are double fronted, each with a central doorway that has a pilastered ashlar doorcase and a bracketed hood. On either side of the door are single plain sash windows set in moulded ashlar surrounds, with a linking cill band. Above, there are three plain sash windows also in moulded ashlar surrounds, with a linking ashlar cill band and brackets under the side window cills. The eaves are bracketed.

The rear facades are similarly double fronted, each featuring a central doorway with a bracketed hood and a six-panel door. On either side are single plain sash windows, and above is a large central staircase sash window for each house, flanked by single sashes, with a small window to the right. These windows also have continuous cill bands. Notably, No. 1 has a canted bay window at the side, while No. 3 features a square bay window.

Inside, all three houses retain many original features, including their original staircases with two turned balusters per tread under shallow segmental archways. They also have panelled doors and door surrounds, windows with shutters on the ground floor, and coving and skirting boards in most rooms. Most houses retain original fireplaces on the first floor, with No. 3 having an original white marble fireplace on the ground floor.
