Description
Armley Park Court is a former board school, built in 1900 and now used as offices. It was designed by architect W.S. Braithwaite. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar details and features a slate roof. It has a central hall plan with cross wings, standing two storeys tall with a basement and attics. The façade consists of seven bays, with the entrance bays at positions two and six projecting outward. The entrance features a wide doorway with a segmental arch and a keystone, along with an overlight that has a carved keystone displaying interlaced 'LSB'. Console brackets support a segmental cornice or hood above the entrance. There are paired windows above this entrance, and the pilastered corners rise to a cornice and a square stone ventilator tower topped with pilasters, a lead-covered dome, and a tall finial. The first and seventh bays, along with the four-window central bay, have tall ground-floor windows and segmental-arch windows on the first floor, adorned with ornate Dutch gables that feature obelisk finials. The interior has not been inspected. Walter Braithwaite was the last architect for the Leeds School Board and designed eight schools; this building shares similar details with his Pupil Teacher College, which was constructed in the same year. In 1903, the school accommodated 1,180 students across mixed and infants departments.
