Description
A pair of cottages located on Canal Road, Leeds, were built between 1834 and 1847 and altered in the 20th century. Constructed of coursed stone rubble, the cottages have a cement tile roof with a reduced end stack on the right side. They are three storeys high, built into the ground slope with access to the rear provided at first-floor level. Each cottage features a door within a plain surround on the left, and a wide rectangular window on the right. There's a narrower window on the first floor and a wider window on the second floor, all with plain stone surrounds. A possible original three-light frame window is present on the top floor to the left. The interiors include shallow arched stone vaulting on the ground floor, and a corner stone staircase located towards the rear of the left side of No.8 cottage. These cottages were built when Canal Road terminated at Airegate Wharf and Armley Mills, prior to the road bridge crossing of the canal and river, and may have originally been accompanied by warehouse storage on the ground floor.
