Description
Tower Court is a former board school, now used as offices, built in 1878. It is possibly designed by Richard Adams, who was the architect for the Leeds School Board from 1873 to 1883. The building features red brick with stone details on the front, a slate roof, an ashlar blocking course, gable copings, and two tall stacks at the rear of the central clock tower, along with lower end stacks and ball finials. The ashlar quoins are rusticated at the ground floor.
The structure is two storeys high and consists of 13 bays, with the outer entrance bays being wider and slightly projecting. The central entrance bay is similar and includes a third storey that features a clock and cupola. Designed in the Italianate style, it has 8-panel double doors set in Venetian surrounds, with carved stone panels indicating the entrances for boys, girls, and infants, although the infants' entrance has been reduced to a window. The ground floor and clock tower windows are topped with keyed round arches, while the first floor has cross windows and the pediments and left and right returns of the clock tower feature oculi.
The extensive use of stone includes a plinth, short attached columns flanking the entrances, pilasters between the windows, and those on the upper floor have Corinthian capitals. There are also architraves, moulded bands at the first floor and eaves, and a carved surround for the clock face. The left and right returns consist of three bays, with the pilasters made of brick. The interior has not been inspected.
