Description
The Former Methodist Church, now a carpet saleroom, was built in 1905 and designed by architect Charles Barker Howdill. It features a T-plan layout with the chapel entrance located on the corner and a Sunday School range at the rear. The building is constructed of red brick and terracotta and stands two storeys tall.
The entrance front includes a single-storey flat-roofed porch with fluted columns, a moulded surround, and panelled double doors. Flanking windows are set in architraves with a cornice, and there is an eaves cornice and blocking course. Behind the porch, the main gable showcases an elaborate Venetian window with fluted columns and radiating mullions, framed by pilasters that end in domed ventilation louvres. The gable features ramped walling, gable coping, and an ornate date panel with scrollwork and an obelisk finial at the apex. The side walls have similarly styled windows, some with original glazing, and ornate dated rainwater heads. A round-arched doorway with a keyblock is recessed on the left, with detailing that matches the windows, and a shaped gable above.
Inside, the main hall has side aisles supported by cast-iron columns with Ionic-style capitals and dentilled ceiling cornices.
The building is complemented by subsidiary features, including a front wall with square piers and ramped scrolled railings, which have scrolled detailing on the gates, although some parts are damaged.
Historically, the architect became a partner in his father's firm in 1893 and served as an assistant architect to the Leeds School Board from 1889. He taught building construction at various technical schools until his death in 1941 and is believed to have been the first to use colour photography as a teaching aid in architecture lectures.
