Description
No. 16 Ainley Place is a detached cottage with origins dating from the 17th century or early 18th century. The building has been altered over time and is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and rubble, featuring quoins and a pitched roof made of stone and slate. It has a central chimney stack and another at the gable.
On the southeast elevation, the ground floor includes a former central doorway that has a deep millstone grit lintel with chamfered reveals and millstone grit surrounds, although it is partly blocked with a later light. There is also one four-light stone mullioned window with double chamfers and one single light window. The first floor has one two-light stone mullioned window.
The northeast gable is made of rubble, which was formerly an internal wall, and features a single light window with an oak lintel. The southwest gable has a two-light stone mullioned window and a four-light stone mullioned window on the first floor. The northwest elevation has a ground floor that is back to earth, while the first floor shows a former entrance with stone surrounds and tie-stones.
