Description
The Engine House, Engine Pit, and Bye Pit at Red Brook were built between 1798 and 1811, designed by engineer Benjamin Outram. This structure contains two pits and is made of deeply coursed rubble, although the roof has been removed. It is located roughly at the center point of the Standedge canal tunnel.
On the south elevation, the ground floor features openings with segmental arched heads, while the intermediate level has three similar openings that have been bricked up. The high level also has two openings with segmental arched heads. The west elevation has a tall slender opening at the intermediate level with a segmental arched head. On the north elevation, there is a large segmental arch at ground level, which is blocked, along with two small blocked openings, one of which has a segmental arched head. The intermediate level has two small blocked openings, one of which also has a segmental arched head.
Inside, the building encloses the engine pit and bye pit, which were used to drain and operate the central part of the tunnel. The pits are brick-lined and circular in cross-section, with later square parapets built around each pit. The engine used was a 70-inch atmospheric engine of the Newcomen type.
