Description

The overflow portal at Butterley Reservoir, built between 1891 and 1906 by T. & C. Hawksley & Co., is constructed of ashlar stone. It features a semicircular arched head with moulded reveals. The surrounding structure is made of ashlar, topped with a moulded cornice and a blocking course. The wings on either side curve forward to the northwest and slope downwards, forming ashlar walls that turn inward and end in squared ashlar posts with moulded pyramidal copings. The tops of the wings are lined with bevelled stone steps, and there are iron sluices positioned in front of the portal.
