Description

The Church of St Nicholas is a Gothic Revival church built in 1876, with the lower stage of the tower possibly dating back to the 18th century. It features finely dressed stone with ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof with gable copings. The structure includes a two-stage square west tower, a four-bay nave with a gabled south porch, and a two-bay chancel with a vestry on the north side. The west tower has diagonal buttresses that are applied to the quoins of the earlier lower stage. On the south side of the tower, there is a small, blind, round-arched window with an inscribed lintel from 1767, along with a small ogee-headed window below it. A recent small addition is located at the base of the tower on the south side. The upper stage of the tower features large, louvred, two-light bell-chamber openings with reticulated tracery, a slated pyramidal roof, a moulded gutter on moulded brackets, and an iron weathercock. The nave has two-light windows, the chancel has single-light windows, and the east window is a three-light design, all with traceried heads.

Inside, the church has an arched-braced king-post roof in the nave and a scissor-braced truss in the chancel. The font, likely from the 17th century, has an octagonal bowl and pedestal, with paired traceried panels on the bowl and single traceried panels on the pedestal. The east window features colourful stained glass from 1879, while the chancel windows on the south side contain fine stained glass from 1938 and 1939 by William Morris and Co. of Westminster, with the latter signed.
