Description

Dewsbury Baptist Church is a Gothic Revival church that opened on December 7th, 1871, and was extended in 1923. It is constructed of pitch-faced stone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The church has a five-bay buttressed nave with a gabled facade. On the right side, there is a square tower topped with a splay-footed octagonal ashlar spire that includes lucarnes. To the left, there is a square squat tower with a hipped roof.

The facade features a three-bay arcaded and gabled porch supported by squat red granite columns with foliage capitals. This arcade includes a central door flanked by two-light traceried windows. Above the porch, there is a large six-light traceried window with triple arches at the top. The right tower has three tiers, with a paired lancet window on the second tier and a three-light traceried window on the third tier. A deep corbel table and a small moulded cornice support the spine.

To the left of the facade, there is an entrance to a single-storey ancillary accommodation, which is within an open, three-bay, arcaded porch similar to the main entrance. The side elevation features paired lancet windows with a circle in the head, which rise above the eaves in gabled dormers topped with wrought iron finials.

Additionally, there is a lower addition to the west gable that includes transept-like two-storey wings to the north and south for ancillary accommodation. Inside, there is a raking gallery at the rear of the church and a school room located beneath the church.
