Description
This building, located immediately to the south of Thornhill Lees Church of England School, was constructed around 1858 and originally served as a school and schoolmaster's house. It is made of pitch-faced stone with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs with copings on large cut kneelers, along with two prominent ornamental chimneys. The structure is primarily single storey, except for the two-storey house section.
The design is nearly symmetrical, with cross-wings on both the left and right, the left one projecting slightly. Each cross-wing has a three-light window topped with a hood that extends over a stilted arched tympanum, which is decorated with incised designs. The gable apexes feature the Savile coat of arms along with the motto "BE FAST," and each apex is adorned with a wrought iron decorative finial.
The central part of the building includes a projecting open porch on the right, accessed by five steps, supported by engaged colonnettes with foliage capitals that hold up a moulded, cusped arch. To the left of the porch is a six-light window with a king mullion, styled similarly to the windows in the cross-wings. The right side of the building is treated in the same manner, and at the rear, the two-storey house continues the architectural style.
