Description
The railway bridge over the River Calder, built in 1847 for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company, features two identical spans supported by large rusticated ashlar abutments and a central pier. The bridge, which opened in 1848, has a cast iron span consisting of six arched girders. The spandrels are designed as a gothic arcade that narrows towards the center. The outer arches are inscribed with "JOSEPH BUTLER & CO. STANNINGLEY IRON WORKS. NR. LEEDS. 1847" and have slightly more decorative detailing. The trusses are supported by cast-iron cross-shaped ties and diagonal tie-bars, while the main arches are bolted together in five sections. The bridge is topped with gothic arcaded parapets made of cast iron.
