Description
The railway bridge over the Calder and Hebble Navigation, known as the Long Cut, was built in 1847 for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company, with the line opening in 1848. This bridge features a single span supported by large rusticated ashlar abutments, with the span constructed from cast iron. It includes six arched girders, which are designed with spandrels that resemble a gothic arcade, tapering towards the center. The outer arches display the inscription: "JOSEPH BUTLER & CO. STANNINGLEY IRON WORKS. NR. LEEDS. 1847" and are slightly more elaborately designed. The trusses are secured with cast-iron X-section cross-shaped ties and diagonal tie-bars, and the main arches are bolted together in five sections. Additionally, the bridge is adorned with gothic arcaded parapets made of cast iron.
