Description

The Old School is a building that was originally constructed as a school in 1642 and has since been converted into a parish hall. It was extended in 1868 and is built from coursed squared limestone, banded with ironstone, and features a plain-tile roof with a stone end stack. The structure has a two-unit plan and is two stories high, with a three-window range and an additional one-window section.

The central feature on the front is a two-light hollow-chamfered stone mullion window with a hood mould, flanked by two similar three-light windows. Above the central window, there is an ironstone panel inscribed with "JANE LEESON/HATH BUILDED/THIS HOUS FOR/4 FREE SCHOOLE/FOR EVER", and a datestone above that reads "1642/FEARE GOD/HONOUR YE KING". A central dormer window also features a two-light stone mullion window with a hood mould.

The building has a chamfered ironstone plinth and a stone-coped gable on the left side, complete with kneelers made of ironstone. The 19th-century addition on the right is a cross-wing that includes a large five-light stone mullion and transom window on the ground floor, with a hood mould and a blank panel above. There is also a two-light stone mullion window in the gable with a hood mould, ironstone quoins, and stone-coped gables with kneelers, as well as a bell-cote on the front gable.

At the rear, there is a central ogee- and hollow-chamfered stone doorway with a four-centred head, cut spandrels, and a panel above that is carved with three fleur-de-lys, along with a hood mould. The old studded plank door features ornamental hinges. Inside, the building has an open fireplace with a chamfered cambered bressumer and a first-floor fireplace with a cambered ogee-stop-chamfered bressumer. The roof features 19th-century arch-braced collar trusses.
