Description
Wood Lane Bridge is a bridge built in the mid-1840s by Thomas Grainger, located about half a mile northeast of Dewsbury Station. It carries Wood Lane, which is now a footpath, over the Leeds, Dewsbury & Manchester Railway line. The bridge slopes downwards from east to west due to the terrain.
It is constructed from coursed local rock-faced sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a segmental arched span. The arch incorporates rusticated voussoirs that spring from ashlar quoined jambs and an ashlar impost band. Above the arch, there is a projecting ashlar stringcourse that forms a carriageway band, and the parapet is made of larger coursed rock-faced sandstone blocks topped with large rounded ashlar coping stones. Notably, the coping stone at the far eastern end of the north parapet has been replaced by a roughcast concrete block.
The approach walls attached to the bridge include a substantial red-brick and sandstone wall added in 1880 on the west side to divert Wood Lane for the construction of a neighbouring railway line, which is now removed. However, these approach walls are not of special interest and are excluded from the listing.
