Description
The Marsden War Memorial is made of Portland stone and is situated on a prominent raised area in the southeast of the park. It features a tall square shaft on a pedestal, with a moulded base and a stepped plinth. The shaft has a deep moulded cornice, topped with a swagged sarcophagus that holds an eternal flame. Rectangular pedestal wings on either side are adorned with recumbent lions.
The north and south faces of the pedestal are convex, each displaying a swagged cartouche inscribed with the word 'PAX'. The north face bears the inscription: 'IN HONOUR OF / THOSE WHO FOUGHT / IN SYMPATHY WITH / THOSE WHO SUFFERED / AND IN REMEMBRANCE OF / THOSE WHO FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914 1918'. The south face reads: 'IN PROUD AND / THANKFUL MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF MARSDEN / WHO FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914 1918 / REST ETERNAL / GRANT THEM LORD.'
On the north and south faces of the wings, there are four polished granite plaques listing the names of 138 individuals who fell in the First World War. Additionally, the north face of the base, below the pedestal, is inscribed 'AND IN / 1939 1945', accompanied by plaques on either side that name 34 individuals who fell in the Second World War.
