Description
The Church of St John is a Commissioners church built in the Lancet style between 1823 and 1827 by Thomas Taylor. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a stone slate roof with a crenellated parapet. The west tower is square and consists of four tiers, with diagonal buttresses, a crenellated parapet, and crocketed pinnacles. The tower has three-light bell chamber openings adorned with Y-tracery. The nave has seven bays and is heavily buttressed, with the buttresses extending above the parapet as gabled pinnacles. The windows are two-light lancets with Y-tracery and hood moulds. There is a small, single-bay chancel that includes a large three-light east window with Y-tracery, and a tiny Lady chapel added around 1946 on the north side of the chancel.
Inside, the bay divisions are marked by buttresses that support the vaulting over the windows. The church features a panelled ceiling and a west gallery with a panelled oak front and an elaborately carved frieze. There is a panelled oak dado in both the nave and chancel. The octagonal font, which has small granite colonnettes on a clustered pedestal, was restored in 1927. The church is noted for its very colourful stained glass, including the east window created by Francis Barnett of York.
