Description
The Church of St Matthew is a Gothic Revival church built in 1848 by Bonomi and Cory, featuring a Decorated style. It is constructed of hammer dressed stone and has a stone slate roof. The building includes a squat square, unbuttressed west tower with a stair turret, a low 4-bay nave with lean-to north and south aisles, and a south porch. The chancel consists of 3 bays, with a 2-bay chapel to the south and a vestry to the north. The church has 2-light bell chamber openings with square heads and Tudor-arched lights, a 3-light window on the west side, and a crenellated parapet. The clerestory features 2-light, square-headed windows with tracery, while the aisle and chapel windows are 3-light. The chancel's south side has a large 6-light transomed window, and the east window is a prominent 14-light transomed window, all adorned with Decorated tracery. The lean-to vestry on the north side has three diagonally set ashlar stacks with crenellated caps.
Inside, there is a 4-bay arcade on octagonal piers to the north and south, and a 2-bay arcaded chancel with a side chapel to the right and an organ to the left. The chancel features choir stalls, a carved and traceried chancel screen with texts at the base, and straight-backed pews with straight sides. The nave roof is scissor-braced with pierced side panels, while the chancel roof is a heavy hammer beam design with pierced spandrels and pendant bosses.
