Description
The property at 98 and 100 Lower Wellhouse Road comprises two weavers’ houses dating from the early to mid-19th century, and forming part of a local group. A doorway within No. 98 appears to be part of an earlier building, potentially from the 17th or 18th century. The houses are constructed of hammer-dressed stone, with a pitched stone slate roof (partially covered in bitumen on No. 98). Stone brackets support the gutter. The west elevation has three storeys. The ground floor features a central doorway to No. 100, with stone surrounds. There are also two three-light stone mullion windows, although one mullion has been removed from each. Part of No. 98 projects slightly and has a heavily coursed stone appearance, again reflecting the earlier building. Its entrance has a millstone grit lintel, quoins, a low arched head, and chamfered reveals. A datestone in the lintel is inscribed 'H.E.M. 1.98'. A former drip moulding is visible on the north side. The first floor has one former eight-light stone mullioned window, with the central light blocked and several mullions missing. The second floor contains a twelve-light stone mullioned window. The south gable end has water tabling above No. 96. The north gable (of No. 100) incorporates a two-light stone mullioned window on the first floor, and a large entrance with a stone surround and stone bridge on the second floor. The east elevation features a two-light stone mullioned window on each floor.
