Description

SD 92SE TODMORDEN (former M.B.) MANKINHOLES (east side)

7/202 Mankinholes Youth Hostel (Mankinholes Hall) (formerly listed as 22.11.66 Youth Hostel, Mankinholes)

G.V. II

House, now forming Youth Hostel. Late C16 house altered, and added to, probably early C19. Large dressed stone, stone slate roof. 2½ storey to road, 2 storey to sides. Main interest is in the gable facing the road which has 3 double chamfered mullioned windows with arched lights, sunken spandrels and hollow chamfered mullions to ground floor. They are of 3 lights, 3 lights and 4 lights with hoodmould which continues over all with straight returns. The first floor has been added and has 2 flat faced mullioned windows of 3 lights with same to attic. Coped gable with kneelers and crocketed finial to apex which has carved ball. Similar gable to east end. Between are 4 bays. Only that to west end is original, 3 added bays, C19. These have sashed window to the north entrance front and flat faced mullioned windows to the south of 3 and 5 lights. 2 stacks to ridge. The earliest building appears to have been a cross-wing running north to south, possibly built on to earlier timbered hall (conjectural), reorientated and rebuilt early C19.
