Description
Mankinholes Hall, now a Youth Hostel, is a late 16th century house that was altered and expanded, likely in the early 19th century. It is constructed of large dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The building is 2½ storeys tall on the road side and 2 storeys on the sides. The most notable feature is the gable facing the road, which includes three double chamfered mullioned windows with arched lights, sunken spandrels, and hollow chamfered mullions on the ground floor. These windows consist of three lights, three lights, and four lights, all topped with a hoodmould that has straight returns. The first floor, which was added later, has two flat faced mullioned windows with three lights, and there are similar windows in the attic. The gable is coped and features kneelers and a crocketed finial at the apex, which has a carved ball. There is a similar gable at the east end. Between the gables are four bays, with only the westernmost bay being original; the other three bays were added in the 19th century. These later additions include a sashed window on the north entrance front and flat faced mullioned windows to the south, consisting of three and five lights. The building has two stacks along the ridge. The earliest part of the structure appears to have been a cross-wing running north to south, possibly built onto an earlier timbered hall, which is conjectural, and was reoriented and rebuilt in the early 19th century.
