Description
The Old Bridge Inn is a public house that was first recorded with landlord John Hurstwood in 1754. The exterior dates from the mid-18th century, although it contains earlier features inside. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a rendered finish and has a stone slate roof. The building has a two-storey wing with an aisle or outshut on the left-hand return wall, adjacent to a long, low single-storey range. All windows are flat-faced mullioned types, including a prominent 4-light window with a 3-light window above it. There is a doorway with monolithic jambs at the junction of the wing and the single-storey building, which has two 3-light windows. Other windows have been altered, and there are four stacks along the ridge.
Inside, the wing features a board and muntin oak panelled wall, likely from the 17th century, at the junction of the side aisle. The low building contains a large cruck-truss with a tie-beam, spur, and yoke at the apex, probably dating from the 16th century. Additionally, an octagonal font, discovered during excavations between the inn and the nearby church, is preserved inside and may date from the 16th century, belonging to an earlier church that has a site dating back to 1464.
