Description

The Church of St Bartholomew, built in 1868, is a Gothic Revival church located in Ripponden. It features hammer-dressed stone and a stone slate roof. The structure includes a nave, aisles, transeptal chapels, a south-west corner tower, and a chancel. The three-stage tower is positioned in the first bay of the aisle and is supported by angle buttresses with offsets. There is a doorway in the first stage, and a clock is situated between the second and third stages, which also has a two-light belfry window with plate tracery and a quatrefoil. The tower is topped with a broached octagonal spire that has lucarnes on its principal faces.

The five-bay aisle is characterized by pointed arched three-light windows with flowing tracery, separated by buttresses. The clear-storey windows alternate with arched lights. The transepts have coped gables and pointed arched tracery windows. The chancel has a lower roof line and features a large east window with five lights and flowing tracery. This church is the fourth to be built on the site, with the first established by Royal Charter from Edward IV in 1464, followed by constructions in 1610 and 1729.

Inside, the church has a five-bay nave with pointed arches supported by clustered colonnettes and a six-bay arch-braced roof. There is a carved reredos with arcades and painted panels depicting the Apostles, along with a finely carved pulpit in the Gothic Revival style. The church also contains Victorian stained glass windows and some wall tablets from the earlier church, including a notable one with a carved urn dedicated to John Howarth of Bridge Royd, Soyland, who died in 1804.
