Description
Yew Trees is a house divided into two occupations, dating from the mid to late 17th century, with a cross-wing that underwent alterations in the late 18th century. The building is constructed of thin coursed hammer-dressed stone, rendered on the sides and rear, and features a stone slate roof. It has a hall and cross-wing plan, standing two storeys high with a single-storey outshut at the rear of the hall range.
The south front has two bays. The first bay is the remaining part of the hall range from the late 18th century, likely replacing an earlier timbered hall, to which a cross-wing was added in the 17th century. This bay includes flat-faced mullioned windows with five lights on each floor, where the center light is slightly wider than the others. There are tall paired doorways with composite jambs that lead to the cross-wing, which has a two-light window above.
The second bay forms the projecting cross-wing, with a return wall featuring a small solid chamfered window. The gable is coped with kneelers and has double chamfered mullioned and transomed windows, with twelve lights on the ground floor (now forming three large windows due to lost transoms) and ten lights on the first floor. The right-hand return wall has a tall lateral stack with offsets and double chamfered mullioned windows with hoodmoulds, featuring six lights below and five lights above, flanked by two-light windows on each floor. The rear of the building has coped gables, kneelers, and a gable stack, along with a cat slide roof over the single-storey outshut.
