Description

Harley Head Farmhouse is a row of cottages that originated as an early 18th-century house in an L shape, to which four additional bays were added to the left side in the late 18th or early 19th century. The building is constructed from thin coursed rubble stone, which is whitewashed, and features a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and the original house follows a hall and cross-wing plan, with the cross-wing hipped to the south and gabled to the north.

The south front of the original house consists of three bays, each with chamfered mullioned windows that have square reveals and three large lights, with the center light being sashed. There are two inserted doorways with thin monolithic jambs, and above these is a long hoodmould that has been partly damaged by the inserted doorways. The first floor has one similar window and additional sashed windows. There is one chimney stack on the left gable and another at the junction of the second and third bays. The right-hand return wall features a two-light similar window on the first floor.

At the rear, there is a single-storey outshot that is flush with the cross-wing, which retains chamfered mullioned windows with square reveals, now also with three large lights and hoodmoulds on both floors. This elevation is rendered. There is another similar window in the aisle. Attached to the building, with a lower roofline, are three bays that have flat-faced mullioned windows of three lights each. There is one chimney stack on the ridge.

Between 1839 and 1887, the Brighouse Council offices were located here before the municipal offices were built in the Town Hall in Brighouse in 1887.
