Description
Lower Han Royd is a house with an attached barn dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the late 18th century. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The south front has two bays of thin, flat-faced mullioned windows with overlapping lintels of five unevenly sized lights, some of which are blocked. A porch, located at the junction of the house and barn, features a coped gable with kneelers. The lintel above the porch doorway is inscribed “M 1621 MSA” and has a flat arch and moulded surround; the inner doorway has a straight lintel with a stop-chamfered surround. To the right of the porch is a cart entry with a straight lintel and chamfered surround. The masonry at first-floor level is disturbed. The rear of the house retains three bays of mullioned windows on both floors, with chamfered mullioned windows of two lights and a single light on the ground floor; and double-chamfered mullioned windows of five, three, and four lights on the first floor. There are two stacks on the ridge. The porch’s position highlights the building's original longhouse form.
