Description
This is a terrace of twelve houses at 149-160 Railway Terrace, built in the 1840s, likely for Colonel Edward Akroyd and probably designed by W H Crossland. The houses are constructed with hammer-dressed stone and have ashlar dressings, topped with a slate roof. A chamfered plinth runs along the base. Each house features a Tudor arched doorway with decorative strap hinges within a stop-chamfered surround. The windows are mullion and transom, with three lights alternating between sides, and a three-light mullion window above. The inner ten houses are paired and have five gabled dormers each, featuring copings, kneelers, two single lights with a transom to the upper floor, and later inserted paired windows below. A projecting course at the eaves forms a continuous support for the cast iron gutter. Gable ends are quoined with coped verges and kneelers. The ridge features six square stacks, each with a plinth, tabling, and a vertical groove on each face. This terrace represents an important early example of planned industrial housing.
