Description

This barn dates from the early 18th century and is located attached to the rear of Swift Place Farmhouse, off Rochdale Road in Ripponden. The barn is built of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof, featuring quoins. A segmental arched cart entry on the south side has voussoirs and a stop-chamfered surround, with a five-pointed star incised on the southern skewback. The keystone is inscribed "17 H 14", though part of the inscription is obscured by metal guttering. An inner porch is set within a portal of an aisle, containing a similar arched entry and doorways with chamfered surrounds within the re-entrant angle. To the right of the main entry is a two-light chamfered mullioned window. At the lower end, a mistal doorway has a Tudor arched lintel and a stop-chamfered surround. The right-hand return wall features kneelers and arched ventilators with an owl-hole to the apex. The rear of the barn has a segmental arched cart entry with skewbacks, and a mistal doorway with a quoined lintel and chamfered jambs. Inside, the barn has four bays and a queen-post roof.
