Description
This is a substantial house, initially dating to 1626, with significant additions made in 1698 and 1704. The additions enclosed a rear courtyard, and it is likely the present staircase was inserted at this time. The house is constructed of ashlar with a stone slate roof.
The main west wing features a weathered plinth, a chamfered light, and a four-light, double-chamfered mullioned window to the basement. The ground floor has a four-light chamfered mullioned window to the side aisle set under a wide gable and a five-light double-chamfered mullioned window, now with sash windows, on the ground floor. Above this, to the first floor, are two sash windows with architraves set in the gable. Three gables are topped with coping, ball finials to the apex, kneelers, and valleys. A later inserted doorway has a pointed arched lintel to the left of the window, altered to two sashes with a matching one to the first floor, all under a hood mould with circular stops. A former fire-window sits to the left of a date stone inscribed 'The Hoyle Family /ESH/1704'. An eight-light mullioned and transomed window is present on the ground floor, with a matching one to the first floor. A break in the stonework marks the junction with an added wing, which includes two double-chamfered mullioned cross windows to each floor and a gable stack.
The rear of the house exhibits two coped gables, finials, and mullioned and transomed windows. A tall inserted stair window with an architrave is also present. A doorway with a shallow arch is inscribed with the date 1626. Facing this range is a two-story structure with chamfered mullioned windows and a doorway with a cyma moulded surround. A lintel inscribed with a stylized “H” within a tressure is also visible. Linking blocks feature doorways inscribed "16E S98," another with a basket-arched lintel, a cross window and a columbarium.
Interiors retain two high-quality fireplaces. One within Swift Mews appears to be imported, featuring a shallow Tudor arch, an elaborate moulded surround with detached fluted Corinthian columns, an entablature, and a moulded cornice. In the former parlour wing (No. 6), a Tudor arched fireplace has carved shields set in sunken spandrels, a cyma moulded surround, a decorated lintel flanked by tall fluted Doric pilasters with carved faces on the pedestals, a full entablature enriched by fluting and roundels, a dog-leg staircase with raised and fielded dado panelling, and a king post roof with "V" struts.
The property is notable and was added to over time, with the rear buildings likely used for textile manufacture. The courtyard features an excellent pair of tall ashlar gate piers, dating from around 1704, which have rusticated pilasters, pulvinated friezes, cyma moulded cornices, and are surmounted by ball finials.
