Description
Great Merry Bent is a house dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, constructed from dressed stone with a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and a double pile layout. The south front features two bays of double chamfered mullioned windows on either side of a doorway that has a segmental arch and composite jambs. There is a 6-light window with an 8-light window above it on the first floor, featuring a king mullion design (3 + 5), and a 4-light window with a similar window above it on the first floor. A moulded band runs along the façade. To the left, a wing projects forward with a quoined angle and kneelers. The left-hand return wall has a 5-light double chamfered mullioned window with cavetto mullions, and a similar window above on the first floor. The wide gable of the main range has coping and kneelers, along with chamfered mullioned windows of 4 lights and 5 lights, and a 5-light window above on the first floor. The rear of the house has three bays of double chamfered mullioned windows, a 4-light window with a similar window above on the first floor, and a doorway with a rusticated surround and voussoirs featuring an expressed keystone. Two bays break forward, each with 5-light windows on both floors. The building has two gable stacks and one central stack. The interior is largely used for agricultural purposes.
