Description

The building comprises a late 16th-century house with alterations from 1743 and a mid-19th century cottage, now altered to create six dwellings. Constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof, it is two storeys high with an added attic storey dating to the mid-18th century. The building has a U-shaped plan with projecting wings, the main range having a catslide roof. The mid-19th century cottage, facing south, features three-light, flat-faced mullioned windows on each floor, along with a doorway with monolithic jambs. This cottage is attached to the west wing (No. 3), with quoins marking the division. The west wing has a four-light chamfered mullioned window above a five-light flat-faced mullioned window on the first floor. A return wall of this wing contains a basket arched doorway with chamfered jambs. The hall range, at a right angle, features a double-chamfered mullioned window of five arched lights with sunken spandrels. The first floor of this range has a single chamfer. An inserted doorway with monolithic jambs replaces what was a through-passage doorway, now altered into a window. The first floor also has two windows of two arched lights, lacking mullions. The second floor displays two flat-faced mullioned windows of four lights, mostly blocked. The east wing projects forward and was largely remodelled, featuring a main entry in its return wall. It has a wide gable with quoins and a kneeler to the left. The symmetrical three-bay façade has two-light sash windows either side of a central bay, with an aisle doorway having composite jambs and a chamfered surround, and one chamfered window above the first floor and attic. An added 19th-century cell is attached. The rear elevation features a wide doorway with a Tudor arch and chamfered surround, bearing the inscription "1748" above the passage doorway. To the left is a chamfered window with a two-light window above, featuring arched heads to the lights for the staircase. A six-light chamfered mullioned window, with a matching window above the first floor, is also present. An inserted doorway with monolithic jambs is alongside a three-light chamfered window (lacking mullions) with a five-light flat-faced mullioned window above the first floor. Three stacks are located on the ridge. Internally, a dog-leg stair has an open string with turned balusters and a ramped handrail, likely contemporary with the date inscribed on the rear door, around 1748.
