Description
The Cemetery Chapel, located on Cemetery Lane in Sowerby Bridge, is a Grade II listed building dating from the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed of coursed dressed stone and features a roof covered with large slates and a lead cupola. The chapel has a cruciform plan, with a north porch and a central fleche. Designed in the Gothic style, it includes rectilinear tracery and off-set diagonal buttresses.
The porch features a shouldered-arched double door with decorative ironwork and an oculus above, all set within a pointed-arched surround. Above the porch, the gable has a spherical triangle window with a head-stopped hoodmould. The west and east gables each have a three-light window with a head-stopped hoodmould, while the south gable boasts a large circular window with star-shaped cusped tracery and a head-stopped hoodmould.
Additional architectural details include kneelers, ashlar copings, and gable finials throughout the structure. The south gable is topped with an octagonal chimney. The central octagonal fleche has glazed, traceried sides and rises as a broached, ribbed spire, complete with lucarnes and a weathervane. This chapel served as the non-conformist chapel, with a similar Anglican chapel previously located to the northwest, as indicated on the 1919 Ordnance Survey Map.
