Description
High Royd Bridge is a canal bridge built around 1798 for the Rochdale Canal Company. It is constructed from coursed squared stone and features a horseshoe arch with tie-stones. There is a band below the parapet, which may have been rebuilt, and the parapet has triangular section coping. Pilaster buttresses flank the arch and rise into ashlar piers at the parapet, where the coping is raised and hipped above them. On the south side, below the arch, there is a tow path with a large kerb stone. For more information on the history of canal construction, refer to Sowerby Long Bridge.
