Description
Heald Wall Nook Cottage is a house that was formerly a parish workhouse, built in 1827. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and consists of two cells, each with flat-faced mullioned windows that have two wide lights and two square windows above on the first floor, although all the glazing has been altered. The doorways have monolithic jambs, with one doorway blocked. Above the central doorway, there is a plaque that reads: "This Building was Erected A:D 1827, by a Committee with the money arising from the coal in the White Birch Farm in Northowram, of which the interest that arises therefrom, is to be distributed to such poor people of Barkisland as have no Parochial Relief." The cottage features stone gutter brackets and has two stacks at the ridge. Modern buildings attached to either end are not included in the listing. Inside, the cottage retains a room that is panelled in pine, which is said to have been the former Council meeting room.
