Description

This is a terrace of 12 houses located at 137-148 St Stephen's Street, built in the 1840s for Colonel Edward Akroyd, likely designed by W H Crossland. The houses are constructed from hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and feature a slate roof and a chamfered plinth. Each house has Tudor arched doors with ornamental strap hinges set in stop-chamfered surrounds. The design includes three-light mullion and transom windows on alternating sides, with three-light mullion windows above, some of which still have their original glazing bars.

The inner ten houses are paired and topped with five gabled dormers, each featuring copings, kneelers, and two single lights with transoms on the upper floor, along with later inserted paired windows below. A projecting course at the eaves provides continuous support for the cast iron gutter. The gable ends are quoined with coped verges and kneelers. There are six square stacks along the ridge, each with a plinth, tabling, and vertical grooves on each face. The garden walls are made of narrow coursed sandstone with triangular copings. This terrace is an important early example of planned industrial housing.
