Description

The guide post, known as the Stone Chair, is located at the junction of West Street, opposite the Duke of York Public House. It dates from the early 18th century and consists of two large upright stone slabs set at an angle to each other, joined at the top by an iron strap. The left face of the guide post features the inscription: 'STONE CHAIR ERECTED 001000241737 RE-ERECTED 1891 HALIFAX' with a hand pointing to the right, and 'BRADFORD' with a hand pointing to the left. The right face reads 'DENHOLME GATE. BRIGHOUSE' with a hand pointing to the left and another hand pointing to the right. Additionally, there is another stone dated 1737, which is likely part of the original structure, cemented to the wall of No. 1. The rear of the slabs has a triangular stone block set between them, which acts as a seat, giving the monument its name, Stone Chair, and influencing the name of the area where it is situated.
